Pronunciation · /sk/ /st/ /sp/
Words starting with s + consonant
School, not "iskool". Station, not "istation".
Why it's difficult
Bangla words don't start with two consonants, so speakers often add a vowel before them: "iskool", "istudent". It adds an extra syllable and changes the rhythm.
How to make it
- 1Start straight away with a long s — hiss for a moment: sss.
- 2Without any vowel, move to the next consonant: sss-k, sss-t, sss-p.
- 3Now shorten the s and join it smoothly to the rest of the word.
Check yourself: Count the syllables by tapping: school = 1 tap, student = 2 taps, station = 2 taps. If you tap one extra, an "i" crept in.
