I'd like to talk about Nasima Aunty, who lives on the floor below us in our building in Mirpur. We moved there about eight years ago, and she was the very first person to knock on our door, holding a plate of homemade pitha, which was a lovely way to say welcome. She's a retired school headmistress in her sixties, and she's incredibly sharp. We mostly chat on the stairs or on her balcony in the evening. She likes asking me about my studies, and to be honest, she sometimes gives better advice than my own teachers. When I was preparing for my exams, she lent me old question papers she had kept for years. I also try to help her in return. Her children live abroad, so I've set up video calls on her tablet and I sometimes pick up medicine for her from the pharmacy. I think we get along so well because we respect each other, even though there's a big age gap. She treats me like an adult, and I enjoy listening to her stories about the old days. When I leave for Malaysia, I think she's one of the people I'll miss most.
