Power cuts aren't unusual in Bangladesh, but one I remember clearly happened last summer during a heatwave. It was around nine at night, and the electricity went off across our whole neighbourhood in Narayanganj. Normally it comes back within an hour, but that night it stayed off for almost six hours. At first everyone was frustrated. The fans stopped, and within minutes the flat became unbearably hot. My phone battery was low, and I'd been planning to study for a test the next morning. Eventually my family gave up and went up to the roof, where there was a slight breeze. Soon our neighbours joined us, carrying candles and mats. Someone brought a flask of tea, and a few of the older men started telling stories about how they managed without electricity when they were young. The children played games in the dark, and at one point we could see the stars much more clearly than usual. I was annoyed about missing my study time, but looking back, it was actually a pleasant evening. It reminded me how rarely we spend time with neighbours, and how much we rely on electricity for almost everything.
