Linking words and phrases vocabulary for IELTS

Twenty natural linking words and phrases to connect ideas clearly in Writing Task 2 and Speaking.

Coherence and cohesion is a quarter of your Writing score, and linking words are a big part of it. Learn them in groups by function: adding ideas, contrasting, giving results and giving examples. Use them only where the logic really needs them; one or two per paragraph is usually enough. In Speaking, softer links like what is more and on the other hand sound natural.

Common mistake: overusing "moreover" and "furthermore" at the start of every sentence, or writing "on the other hand" without a clear contrast. Examiners penalise mechanical, forced linking.
