Describing trends and charts vocabulary for IELTS

Twenty precise verbs, nouns and phrases for describing changes and comparisons in Writing Task 1.

Task 1 rewards accurate, varied language for change and comparison, not fancy words. Learn each verb with its matching noun (rise / a rise, decline / a decline) so you can vary sentence structure: Sales rose sharply and There was a sharp rise in sales. Always add figures and years, and practise with one chart a day.

Common mistake: using "increased" with "to" and "by" wrongly. Rose to 50% gives the final figure; rose by 10% gives the size of the change.
